News From Fort Schuyler

August 25, 2008 - Volume 8, No. 29

ONWARD AND UPWARD - Capt. CATHERINE HANFT '85 takes over as Commanding Officer Naval Support Activity South Potomac (NSASP) in Dahlgren, VA at a change of command ceremony on 29 August. DAVID LAMBERT '47 notes that, "She has had a long and successful career of command posts. Her current assignment is at the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD. Cate is the daughter of GEORGE HANFT, NYSMA '47." NSASP Dahlgren acts as the base landlord for such tenants as the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Joint Warfare Analysis Center, Center for Surface Combat Systems, Aegis Training and Readiness Center and many others. In addition to the Dahlgren facility, NSASP also includes a base in Indian Head, MD, as well as small naval contingents at the Army's Fort Belvoir and at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland.

ADMIRABLE - One of Fort Schuyler's own, EVERETT ROSENBLUM Oct. '46 "...has the distinction of receiving the rank of Admiral in the New York State Naval Militia", writes classmate OTTO LIEPIN. He continues, "This is quite an honor and as I understand the protocol, being an admiral within the New York Naval Militia is recognized with full honors by our federal Navy." This is verified by one of our Washington experts on things maritime, ROD McFADDEN '75, who writes that "... the New York State Naval Militia is one of the very few naval militias which are 'federally recognized'. That is, NYNM rank is recognized by the Defense Department as opposed to being treated as an 'honorary rank'." Rod continues, "The NYNM also has educational benefits for members who are attending New York colleges like, say, Fort Schuyler!"

CHINESE STUDENTS TARRYING - Some of the students from the contingent which arrived at Fort Schuyler earlier in the month will stay to study. According to a note from JANE BARTNETT, Director of Communications at SUNY Maritime, "Four Chinese students (three men and one woman) remained at Maritime and they will study along with regimental and non-regimental students during the fall and spring semesters." Ni hao and welcome aboard!

NO SHALLOW HAL HE - A returning subscriber to NFFS, KENNETH MURPHY '62, thanks the editor for his efforts and writes that: "I do a little of the same thing, sending out a newsletter (mostly hardcopy) to small boat sailors in a group called the Shallow Water Sailors. Since I was a snipe I had to learn navigation and seamanship on my own. But since my boat measures 21 feet and not 800 feet and the Chesapeake Bay bottom is mostly mud and not rock I have survived without a Captains's license/knowledge." According to his website, "The SWSers are trailer sailors who enjoy sailing on water so thin it can be termed a 'heavy dew.'"

FIFTY YEAR PERSPECTIVE - "Over the years, wherever I was, I worked with Schuyler graduates. None have ever let me down or failed to give me help and advice when I needed it. The Schuyler graduation, CAPTAIN OLIVET '21 and GUY DeSIMONE '36 taught me about myself and provided great guidance. I had wonderful classmates in each of the classes I was a part who were good examples of people who worked hard, studied even harder and had lots of fun. With buddies and teachers like those, and Lola for a wife, I couldn't lose. I was never disappointed in my career path in the maritime industry." (Excerpt from the career biography of PETER BULLENKAMP in the History of the Class of '58: New York State Maritime College at Fort Schuyler - 1954 to 2008.)
