BOOK BEAT - The Encyclopedia of India, four volumes, 1530 pages, published in 2007 by Scribner Reference, was edited by STANLEY WOLPERT, Class of 1947. Wolpert, Professor Emeritus of South Asian History at the University of California, LA, first encountered his life-long fascination with India in 1948 when he came to Bombay as a 20-year old marine engineer and witnessed from Malabar Hill the immersion of one-seventh of Mahatma Gandhi's ashes in the Back Bay. That experience led him to abandon his maritime career and eventually become this nation's foremost expert on modern Indian and Pakistan history. Talk about life changing events! (Thanks to JANE B. FITZPATRICK, Acquisitions and Collection Development Librarian at the CUNY Graduate Center - and former Associate Librarian at the Luce Library - for this bibliographic heads up.)

EBB TIDE - The Alumni Association website recently reported the death of RICHARD E. LOVE, Class of October 1946, on 31 December, 2007. Richard had heard about Maritime from friends on Long Island and came to Fort Schuyler from Brooklyn Prep in order to become an engineer and naval officer. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the Atlantic Fleet mine sweeper, USS OSTRICH, and was discharged as a LtJG in December 1949. In 1950 he married Margaret Ann Lloyd and they raised four children. In 1955, after years of night courses at Hofstra College, he received his AAS degree. He parlayed his engineering expertise into a successful career in sales and management, working for Honeywell, Rockwell, Crane, US Filter and Peabody Engineering in positions progressing from sales engineer to Group Vice President. He took early retirement in 1987 and then joined Hosokawa Micron (a machinery builder) as Vice President for Operations. He really retired in 1995 and became a resident of Hilton Head, SC, where he enjoyed golfing, gardening, travel and visits with his four grandchildren. (Thanks to PHIL DILLOWAY, Class of October 1946, for providing Richard Love's profile from the Career Album that the class has compiled in recent years.)
