News From Fort Schuyler

November 19, 1999 - Volume 3, No. 53

GOOD NEWS - The first issue of a brand-new college newsletter is online and in glorious color. Go to the home page at http://www.sunymaritime.edu to read "Maritime Watch". You can even subscribe to an email summary. The updated home page now also sports a link to Newsweek's rating of the engineering program.

ALUMNI BEARING GIFTS - In the course of a recruiting visit to Fort Schuyler this week, NIMA representatives ROY SOLURI, Class of 1962 (Deputy Chief of the Marine Navigation Department) and DEREK FERNON, Class of 1994, (Marine Analyst), stopped by the library to present a wonderful collector's item - a chart of the waters around Fort Schuyler overlaid with a LANDSAT color image of shoreside buildings, roads and foliage. This thoughtful gift to the library, which is a great example of the sort of specialized work that NIMA performs using the new technologies, will go on display at the Library in late January. Thank you Roy and Derek. (BTW - NIMA stands for National Imagery and Mapping Agency. NIMA has one of the best websites in the federal government, located at http://www.nima.mil )

SPEAKING OF ACRONYMS - No one guessed the correct definition of BTB, despite additional possibilities recently suggested by JOE TARTAGLIA, Class of 1976, i.e. "By the Book" or "Bring the Beer." The answer that I was looking for, however, was the acronym that defines all the graduates of the school who attended Maritime prior to the opening of the Throgs Neck Bridge. The acronym was used for the signoff in an email received from HARRY RAUSCH, "58" BTB (Before the Bridge).

APRES VOUS - This response to a November 5th NFFS item came from JERRY HASSELBACH, Class of 1969: "I might be mistaken, but I thought the Vous was about a quarter of a mile down Pennyfield, definitely a different bar than Cammerata's. In the late 1960's Cammerata's was a First Class-only bar (during the week) and the Vous was reserved for the 2nd Class."

LES RESULTATS DU MATCH - That pre-season exhibition game against the French International Basketball Team on November 4 was won by the Maritime College Privateers by a score of 76 - 68. Tres bien fait !

WHERE ARE THEY NOW ? - Following up on the whereabouts of another favorite former member of the faculty, TERRY GARGAN, Class of 1958, a search of the West Legal Directory at Lawoffice.com shows that Terence remains in the New York area as a partner in the admiralty law firm Hill, Betts & Nash in Manhattan. Another whereabout relates to the Maritime Industry Museum Assistant Curator & MIS, BRADLEY D.M.GOLDEN. A 1999 graduate of Webb Institute, Bradley is now in England working on his Master's degree in Marine Technology at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

FREE MONEY FROM MARITIME ? Not quite, but anyone preparing to haul a boat out for the winter might find this an appropriate time to investigate the Yacht Donation Program administered for the College Foundation by DAVE COUGHLIN, Class of 1989. Dave, Director of Waterfront Activities, has put together a snazzy brochure about the program: up to 100% fair market value is tax deductible, no broker required, fast, etc. Link to the Waterfront from the college home page for details, contact information or to request that snazzy brochure. Go to: http://www.nymsailing.com/home/donation.htm

SEAWARD=UPWARD - A press release from GLENN GERMAINE, Class of 1967, President/CEO of Seaward Services announces another big contract, this one with the Military Sealift Command, to operate and maintain 14 training and service craft based at the Pensacola Naval Air Station. What is particularly interesting about this $19M contract, is that craft covered by this contract include parasail launch platforms, parasail towboats, and a 125' long helicopter landing training craft which is described as the smallest air-capable vessel in the Navy. Amazing what Schuyler graduates end up doing.

PLAN AHEAD - April 8, 2000 has been reserved for the 12th Annual Admiral's Ball which marks the college's 125th year of nautical education. The event will take place in midtown Manhattan at the Hilton New York, so if you don't want to drive you can always take the subway.

CALLING ALL KOREAN WAR VETS -The February 4 issue of NFFS invited contributions to a MARAD project relating to the 50th anniversary of the Korean War in 2003. Last week, on November 11, MARAD launched a webpage entitled: "American Merchant Marine During the Korean War." This work in progress contains links to various sites, but it's main purpose is to get the word out that more reminiscences, photographs and artifacts relating to the role of U.S. merchant mariners during this conflict. CLIVE' S COMING - The Luce Library will be hosting an appearance by best-selling author CLIVE CUSSLER on Tuesday, December 7. For details go to: http://www.sunymaritime.edu/LIBRARY.WEB/clive_page.htm
