CUSSLER FANS TAKE NOTE - The Luce Library will be hosting an appearance by best-selling author CLIVE CUSSLER on Tuesday, December 7. Mr. Cussler, who received a Doctor of Letters award from the Maritime College in 1997, makes Fort Schuyler one of his stops on a nation-wide tour to introduce his newest Dirk Pitt adventure novel, Atlantis Found, being published this month. You can meet the author and get a personalized inscription on his newest book. What a great gift idea for yourself or others ! MIDNIGHT SERENADE - A note from DICK STENSON, Class of 1962, reports that he recently attended the Plenary meeting of ISO TC/8, Ships and Marine Technology, in Tokyo, Japan. He continues: "This international technical committee is chaired by Capt. CHARLIE PIERSALL, Class of 1956. Dick is the US delegate to Subcommittee 9 of TC/8. The meeting was attended by approximately thirty representatives of ten countries. At the completion of the meeting, Capt. Piersall hosted a reception aboard a Japanese junk in the middle of Tokyo Bay. By the end of the evening (thanks to an unlimited supply of Japanese beer and saki) all onboard were singing along with the Karaoke machine. A rousing rendition of "The Bells of ST. MARY'S" was provided by Charlie and Dick."

AMERICA'S CUP RETRIEVERS ? A reminder that the preliminaries to the America's Cup 2000 races are underway comes from TONY MARGAN, Class of 1983, who writes: " ... apparently, several Domers are currently taking active roles in the five American challengers currently trying to retake the America's Cup back from the Kiwis. The first round-robin competitions, as part of the Louis Vuitton Cup, began in Auckland, NZ .... on Oct 18th. The final round, between the winner of the Louis Vuitton Cup, and the defender - the Kiwis, takes place in late February/early March." Tony mentions BILL TRENKLE, Class of 1980, who is with Dennis Connor's STARS & STRIPES, and MIKE SPILLANE, Class of 1992, with the New York Yacht Club's YOUNG AMERICA. Additional names come from DAVE COUGHLIN, Class of 1988, Director of Waterfront Activities, who reports that CHRIS UECKER, Class of 1999, is with the St. Francis Yacht Club's AMERICA ONE skippered by Paul Cayard, and that GARY JOBSON, Class of 1973 is covering the races for ESPN. WEST COAST GOURMETS TAKE NOTE - There is a new chef in Arcadia, California. ED WORMUTH, who attended Maritime for two semesters over 30 years ago, has moved West from Florida for the challenges of a new restaurant, Café St. Michel, which features international cuisine, French pastry and speciality coffees.

AT THE VOUS - This reminder from STAN LLOYD, Class of January 1944, that before Pennyfield Estates, before Marineland, and before Cammarata's: "Alumni of the forties recall the property adjacent to the gate as the Rendezvous, bartender unknown since it was very definitely "off-limits." It was suspected that it might have been a last stop of MAA RISER (Bless his heart) prior to marching (?) through the Sallyport."
