QUALITY COUNTS - The State University Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service for 1999 was presented to DAN MASTROMARINO, Campus Network Administrator (and all around computer maven), at an informal ceremony in President DAVID C. BROWN's office on June 23. A note from Chancellor Egan praised Dan with these words: "Your skill, your extensive service to the campus and to State University, and your continued professional achievements find accurate reflection in your selection for this honor."

SHIPPING OUT ON HISTORY - A long article about the last operating Victory and Liberty ships appeared on p. 18 of the NY Times Travel Section on June 20. Included was information on the availability of short cruises on these World War II vintage ships. All three have sailings during the summer: LANE VICTORY in San Pedro, CA http://www.lanevictoryship.com/ ; JOHN W. BROWN in Baltimore, MD http://www.liberty-ship.com/ ; and the JEREMIAH O'BRIEN in San Francisco http://www.crl.com/~wefald/obrien.html Another ship apparently under restoration earlier this year was the RED OAK VICTORY in Richmond, CA http://www.RedOakVictory.com/ In addition, a "multi-media, maritime experience ... with traditional and graceful lines to an actual vessel of the famous Victory Ship Class," AMERICAN VICTORY is envisioned for the Channelside District of Tampa, FL http://www.americanvictory.org/

NOW ON BOARD - The June newsletter of the venerable Maritime Association of the Port of New York & New Jersey (established 1873) notes the addition of two Fort Schuyler graduates to the MAPONY/NJ Board of Directors: BRIAN McALLISTER, Class of 1956, and JAMES McNAMARA, Class of 1964. Both are intimately connected with the NYC maritime scene. Brian is principal owner and president of McAllister Towing and Transportation which operates an extensive fleet of tugs, barges, and ferries in major ports on the U.S. East Coast. Jim is President of the National Cargo Bureau and Chairman of the Maritime Industry Museum at Fort Schuyler. Congratulations to both.

WORDS OF APPRECIATION - June 18 marked the date on which Dr. HOWARD L. ENGLISH, Jr. formally concluded an outstanding career at the Maritime College as Assistant Registrar, Registrar and Vice President for Academic Affairs. In a memo to the campus community, Admiral DAVID C, BROWN, noted that: "Although Howard insisted that there be no formal departure ceremony or presentation, his long and devoted service to Maritime College cannot go unrecognized. I join all of the Maritime family in expressing our appreciation for his contributions to the College for more than a quarter of a century and wish him an enjoyable retirement and success in his new pursuits." Ditto.

BEING TAKEN FOR A RIDE - Faculty and staff have again been invited by Admiral DAVID C. BROWN "...for a day trip aboard our Training Tug GENERAL PHILIP SCHUYLER" on July 1 and 2. This popular, informative program was initiated by the Admiral Brown to enable staff to witness and better appreciate the cadet training environment aboard the college's OTHER floating nautical laboratory - even as the EMPIRE STATE VI sets out on the homeward leg of Summer Sea Term 1999. This first come, first serve nautical event is limited to staff and faculty ( "We are not taking family members or friends, so please do not ask.") To reserve a spot, contact the Admiral's secretary, Dolores Sciglio, at 7271.

BRONX BEATLEMANIACS WAX NOSTALGIC - The cast of Beatlemania performs at Fort Schuyler on Thursday, July 29, as part of the "Summer Concerts in the Park 99" series. Billed as "Music for the Millennium," this FREE concert will take place in the Quadrangle in front of the Mess Deck beginning at 7:30. There is plenty of room for a big audience. The concert is a cooperative effort of the Maritime College, State Senator Guy J. Velella, and the North Bronx-Westchester Neighborhood Restoration Association. N.B. ! Be sure to bring blankets and chairs to counteract that concrete.

REMINDER - NEW EMAIL ADDRESS FOR NFFS - The Maritime College e-mail address for Richard Corson, Editor of NFFS, has changed to: rhcorson@sunymaritime.edu. The alternate backup address remains: rcorson@worldnet.att.net For the time being it might be a good idea to "cc " all NFFS correspondence to the Worldnet address.
