NAVAL ARCHITECT BOWS OUT - One of the most senior members of the faculty in terms of service, ROBERT B. ZUBALY, Professor of Naval Architecture, retired from the Engineering Department on December 31. Bob started teaching at Maritime 43 years ago, in 1955, when Engineering Department labs were still located just outside the Fort walls. His most recent book, "Applied Naval Architecture," was published in 1996 by the Cornell Maritime Press. Stepping in to teach Bob's courses this semester is WILLIAM CALIENDO, Class of 1991, who is completing an advanced degree at Stevens Institute. (Source: Faculty Meeting- 2/9/99)

STAYING IN TOUCH - The newest book by JEFFREY W. MONROE, "Marine Radionavigation and Communications," has been published by Cornell Maritime Press. Captain Monroe, former Associate Professor in the Marine Transportation Department and founding director of the Maritime Industry Museum, not only inscribed a copy of his book for the Luce Library collection, but also noted the contribution of the library staff ("keepers of the sacred archives") in his acknowledgments. The book, which was co-authored by Thomas Bushy of Massachusetts Maritime, seeks "to help the modern ship's officer understand not only the complexities of the application of technology to our industry, but the potential problems that may arise with its use." (Introduction) Captain Monroe's next book, due in 2000, will be "The Encyclopedia of Marine and Transportation Terms."

NEWS FROM THE OTHER SIDE - A fan letter for Australia and its denizens comes from our intrepid NFFS stringer for the Indian Ocean beat, KEVIN COATES, Class of 1979. Kevin, 2nd Mate on the Rapid Deployment Force ship USNS HENRY J. KAISER, e-mailed this dispatch from Fremantle instead of Diego Garcia. "Ga day, mate! Greetings from Western Australia .. DAVE [PRYOR] and I are here at HMAS Sterling, Garden Island, Fremantle...it's the Australian Navy's western HQ. KAISER is operating with the Kangaroos, so to speak....Australia is a great place. They love Americans. Even though our stay is short, looking forward to some great liberty and short time." (Wouldn't it be nice if the EMPIRE STATE could again venture into the Pacific Ocean, even if there is insufficient time for more exotic voyages to the Indian Ocean? Ed.)

AND A CORRECTION FROM KEVIN - "At our last get-together at the O Club at Diego, it was MARK MUNION, Class of 1994, who was at the dinner, not Mark Stein. Sorry about the foul up."

REMINDER TO CELEBRATE FIL - That reception marking long-time librarian FILOMENA MAGAVERO's 50 years at the Maritime College will be held on Friday March 5, in the Reading Room of the Stephen B. Luce Library from 4:30 to 6:00...... RSVP to Richard Corson by 01 March if you plan to attend to insure there will be ample refreshments for all. (See NFFS for January 23 for full details)
