News From Fort Schuyler

November 5, 1998 - Volume 2, No. 51

HIT THE ROAD, HAMPTON - Thursday, November 12, 6 PM, is the date and time for the Hampton Roads Chapter meeting at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. Dinner is a bargain, so act fast. Contact SCOTT MULLER, Class of 1996 at: 757-627-0447.

WEARING THOSE OLD SCHOOL TIES - A recent message from BOB LANDMAN, Class of 1983, notes that: "The Electrical and Electronics Branch at Military Sealift Command Headquarters is a real Schuyler Family Affair. Of the 5 staff, 4 are Schuyler grads: BOB LANDMAN '83, Branch Head, GLENN MORRISSEY '89, BRENDAN THOMPSON '91, and CHRIS ADAMS '92."

DEEP-SEA RESEARCH CONTINUITY AND PARALLELS - A recent subscription to NFFS recently came from mid-Pacific. GARY CHILJEAN, Class of 1969, Master of the Research Vessel ATLANTIS, writes: "This email is coming to you from Latitude 17 South and Longitude 113 West.

We are the tender for the Deep Submergence Vehicle ALVIN which is investigating the hydrothermal vents on the sea floor at this location at 2800 meters below the surface." (Ed. Note: There is an informative home page for the R/V ATLANTIS (1997) at the Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institution site. It shows such things as the ship's location, itinerary, pictures, and specifications. Go to http://www.whoi.edu Look under WHOI Marine Operations.)

An earlier graduate of the school, FREDERICK S. McMURRAY, Class of 1896, pioneered in supporting sea-going scientific work. The Superintendent of the New York Nautical School/Training Ship NEWPORT from 1914 - 1917, McMurray's fifty-three years at sea also included service as Master of the Woods Hole oceanographic survey ketch R/V ATLANTIS from 1932 - 1942. (According to the December 1972 issue of the Woods Hole publication, Oceanus, the mollusk, "Latirus mcmurrayi" was named in Captain McMurray's honor.) Then in 1954, at the age of 76, he came out of retirement to serve as Extra Master aboard Columbia University's R/V VEMA, assisting noted oceanographer, Maurice "Doc" Ewing (founder of the Lamont Geology Observatory) carry out his famous "core-a-day" quest for sediment samples from beneath the ocean floor. A contemporary parallel to Gary's oceanographic career may be found in JEFFREY LEDDA, Class of 1983. As classmate, TONY MARGAN, noted in the February 20 NFFS: "Jeff is an oceanographic/marine engineer .... his area of professional expertise is underwater ROVs (Remote Operating Vehicles), other underwater vehicles, underwater video/photography and lighting. During 1996 and 1997, Jeff was employed (as an independent contractor) by James Cameron to provide technical expertise for all the underwater scenes from the current movie TITANIC. Jeff was also the designated (and only) ROV pilot for "Snoopy," the ROV that took all the underwater footage of the TITANIC in the actual movie."

Soon, graduates of the new Marine Environmental Science program at the college will be joining New York Maritime alumni from earlier years as they study the ocean depths from their own unique perspectives.

RO-RO NEWS - According to a note from Lt. KEN LiVOLSI, Naval Science Department, the Crew Team made its mark at the 9th annual Dowling Cup Regatta on Long Island on November 1. "With nine major rowing schools participating, SUNY [Maritime] placed third in the field, just missing second place by four points. The leader-board was littered with SUNY Maritime first, second, and third place finishes. The women's team blew away the competition with a first place finish in the Varsity-four race and a second place finish in the Novice-eight.

The men's Novice-eight, JV-four, Varsity-four and Varsity-pair rowers all racked up second and third place finishes. It was a very impressive performance considering the competition included the powerhouse Dowling College, Fordham University, Manhattan College, Iona College, Kings Point and several other teams. With one race left in the season, Maritime is looking forward with anticipation to dominating the Braxton Cup Regatta in Philadelphia, PA on 8 November. Maritime's success can be attributed to the student athletes' hard work and dedication, and strict adherence to their motto: "SHUT UP AND ROW!" (Might also be a good motto for crew of the ship-of-state now that elections are over.)

ALT-CTRL-DELETE - In NFFS 2:50 the correct graduation year for KEN HARRIS is 1992. The correct name for NIMA is: National Imagery and Mapping Agency. (Ed.)
