October 8, 1998 - Volume 2, No. 47

LOVE AND MARRIAGE - In response to last week's "Can You Top This?" item, JIM THULL, Class of 1980, writes: "Tell DAVE COOKE that we can top that." Jim and TRUDY SCHWEIKERT, Class of 1981, were married on June 6, 1981. Both were engineering majors.

BABY CARRIAGE - "Would you please announce the birth of my daughter in the next e-mail?' writes BILL WENZEL, Class of 1992. "My wife, Karen, and I had a baby girl on Monday, September 28 at 12:16 PM. Her name is Rebecca Lynn, she weighed 7 lbs 1 oz and she is 19.5 inches long."

LLOYD'S LIST PUNDIT IS A DOLL - The September 23 edition of one of the world's oldest and most authoritative maritime dailies, Lloyd's List, featured a Special Report in its "London Shipbroking" section on the future of the dry bulk carrier and oil tanker markets based entirely on an interview with FRED DOLL, Class of 1979. Fred is senior shipping analyst and director at Clarkson Research Studies. (BTW - Lloyds List has been on the Luce Library want list for years.)

PRESCRIPTION FOR SUCCESS - In a recent note, AL AYMER, Class of 1967, wrote: "I've ...noted that a common theme in many of the comments [in previous issues of NFFS] relate to the great educational experience we had at the Fort. I feel the same way. Although I graduated with an M&O degree, I learned a whole lot more material that has come to serve me well over the years. I'm a pediatrician now and the perseverance I acquired under the bridge has come to my rescue on many occasions."

COLLEGE MISSION UPDATE - As the college evolves over the years so do elements of its core mission. The most recent iteration of the mission was promulgated by ADM. DAVID C. BROWN several weeks ago. In a memo to the college community, he wrote: "I believe that the revised Mission Statement accurately reflects our traditional mission and program as a specialized maritime college, while allowing for growth in the related field of global business, commerce and logistics."

The full statement is sure to be posted on the college web site, but here is your advanced copy: "The Maritime College is a small, prestigious, specialized college of the State University of New York. Its mission is to provide:

  • A learning environment that stimulates intellectual growth, scholarship and creativity
  • An innovative, "hands-on" approach to instruction directed by a dedicated faculty composed of experts in their field
  • Quality undergraduate and graduate programs in international business, engineering, science and technology, with particular emphasis on the maritime industry
  • A structured community which emphasizes responsible citizenship and self-discipline, and which maximizes opportunities for exercising leadership
  • The opportunity for its graduates to qualify for licensure as a merchant marine officer or for commissioning in the United States Armed Forces
  • Through its graduates, a quality workforce and prospective leaders for the state, nation and maritime and international business community, and
  • A nationally and internationally recognized resource of expertise in its specialized disciplines as they relate to the maritime field."

UPDATE ON SCHUYLER CONTINGENT IN WASHINGTON - A recent message from RICK HILLENBRAND, Class of 1978, notes that: "There are several Domers in the DC area working at MARAD and in Pentagon with "dead ships." I frequently interface with GENE MAGEE (76) who is responsible for the Division Chief in charge of MARAD's Reserve Fleet, and I am the Inactive Fleet Manager for the Chief of Naval Operations. By the way, presently there are three Domers working under VADM Amerault in the Pentagon ... the Deputy Chief of Naval Operations (Logistics) (N4). CAPT ROD McFADDEN (75) is in N42, CDR BEN SANCHEZ (79) just arrived in N43, and I.... also in N43, are about to "transition" to the civilian world after completing over 20 years active duty."

GET TO THE ADMIRAL'S BALL IN MILITARY STYLE - A recent graduate, ROBERT MILLINGTON, Class of 1995, has started a business featuring exotic limousines -- such as an 18-passenger Humvee! Call Rob at 516-292-LIMO (5466) for details. Reminder: the next Admiral's Ball, honoring ADM ROBERT C. NORTH, Class of 1966, will be held on November 7 at the New York Hilton.

ALT-CONTROL-DELETE - That recent WISTA Conference was held at the World Trade Center, not King's Point. (Thanks to JANE B. FITZPATRICK, Associate Librarian, for this correction)
