CAN YOU TOP THIS? - Here is a good question from DAVE COOKE, Class of 1972, who asks if he and his wife, (MARJORIE MURTAUGH, Class of 1974) are the first alumni, or first engineers, from Fort Schuyler, to get married to each other? (They were married 8/25/84.) BTW - Marjorie is the first women to graduate from SUNY Maritime.

NEW NEWS ON CAMPUS - The venerable Plan of the Week has suddenly come to life after years of restricted content and arid prose. Hats off to JIM KENNY, Deputy Commandant of Cadets, SANDY CHAMPLIN, Administrative Assistant, and all those contributing to the effort to reinvent this publication. In this week's POW, in addition to "Need to Know" items, there are also sections which actually contain current news of interest to the entire campus community. These include: General Information - Financial Information - Placement Office Information - Regimental Office Information - Sports Events - all in a format that takes advantage of modern-day word processing. Who knows, maybe the student newspaper, "The Porthole," will takes this as a challenge and go to press again.

LUCE BOOKS GET SPECIAL TREATMENT - According to JANE FITZPATRICK, Associate Librarian, Captain DEBORAH DEMPSEY, MMA 76, and author of "The Captain is a Women," stopped by the Luce Library on September 18 and graciously signed both library copies of her new book. Captain Dempsey visited Fort Schuyler with other participants during the annual conference of the Women's International Shipping and Trading Association (WISTA) which was held at Kings Point this year.

WINNING TUG CREW - Those who sailed the college tug GENERAL PHILIP SCHUYLER to victory at the 1998 INTREPID Sixth Annual Tugboat Challenge on Labor Day weekend included Captain ERIC JOHANSSON and Mates ANTHONY PALMIOTTI 79, CHRIS ZOLA 93, and JOHN RYAN 89. Eric is Faculty Advisor to the Tug Club which is led by Cadets ALI MAIORANA 99, President, and ROBERT SWANSON 01, VP. The Luce Library exhibit about the race runs until October 15

NIMA NEEDS MARINE INFORMATION SPECIALISTS - There are jobs available at the Marine Navigation Department of the National Imagery and Mapping Agency according to the Deputy Chief, ROY SOLURI, Class of 1962. "The target grade is GS-11. However, depending on GPA and experience, most applicants will come aboard at the GS5/7 level. RANK HAS ITS PRIVILEGES - According to the POW for Sept. 28 - Oct 4, "Based on the overall performance of the first class, Captain Weaver has approved a request to allow the first class to wear civilian clothing in the messdeck on the weekends. The privilege will remain in effect for the Class of 1999 only; it will not carry over to next year. Additionally ... the dress must be appropriate (shirt, not tank tops, pants and shoes, no flip flops) ..."
