News From Fort Schuyler

August 20, 1998 - Volume 2, No. 37

PARENTS ON THE WEB - The Maritime College Parents' Association website is currently under construction. The homepage has whistle and bell graphics which look great on Netscape 4.0. Go to http://www.sunymaritime.org and see how it looks on your browser.

MORE CONGRADUATIONS ARE DUE - The summer version of graduation for approximately forty students takes place Saturday, August 22. The commencement speaker will be PETER STANFORD, the president of the National Maritime Historical Society. Mr. Stanford himself will be awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree during the commencement ceremony.

A MATTER OF INCHES OR YEARS? After a recent visit to Fort Schuyler, DAN WINTER, Class of 1986, e-mailed: "I took a look at Barry Marsh's model of the Training Ship [TSES V] in the Fort and saw that the length was reported as 533 7 (I think). It seems to me that as a mug it was beat into our heads that the length was 533' 9 3/4". I'm sure that Barry (who was in my class of 1986) can testify to that! I'm curious to know if anyone else remembers the same - its kind of funny that looking back now that we were fed poor info as a mug - come to think of it, I'm sure that I had to do a little extra duty because of that number at least once!" Any takers?

THE SHALLOW WATER SAILOR LETTERMAN - The editor of a publication for small boat sailors, KEN MURPHY, Class of 1962, e-mails that he has used excerpts from "News from Fort Schuyler" about the Titanic (the ship and the movie) in his newsletter and sends "thanks to all the big boat sailors from the Fort" for their Titanic postings. A resident of Maryland who sails the Chesapeake with his wife, "gunk-holing along its bays, rivers, and creeks" in their 21-foot trailerable sailboat, Ken maintains a web page which generally has "Shallow Water Sailor" cruise pictures. This month, however, it features pictures from a trip to England. Go to http://www.erols.com/kgmurphy/ and say hello.

ANOD URL? No, it is not Icelandic, as in: "Vegna aukinna verkefna leitar Kgun." (Isn't that right HORDUR SVERRISSON, Class of 1993? ) Just want to bring to your attention a good URL for links to Internet sites for English language "audio news on demand" maintained by a Texas library. Most sites work with RealAudio. Tune in at: http://www.lib.utexas.edu/Libs/PCL/Audio.html

LONDON CALLING - A recent e-mail from our man at Fairplay magazine, CARL HAUSHEER, Class of 1979, informed us that his classmate, FRED DOLL, "...just became director at Clarkson here in London." Congratulations are due, but what is Fred's e-mail address?

MISS THE F-IRT- 6-IND-1-BMT? If any alumni who have left New York still pine for New York subways, the New York Times recently reviewed a nice "unofficial" subway buff site: http://www.nycsubway.org.

CHAMBER OF SHIPPING SURVEY - An invitation to contribute to an ongoing maritime study comes from ROD McFADDEN, Class of 1975, in his USNR-MMR role as Assistant for Maritime and Merchant Marine Affairs: "The US Chamber of Shipping is conducting a survey, 'aimed at developing an inventory of existing communications requirements during critical navigational operations...' Participation is open to individual or entities operating oceangoing commercial vessels in/to US ports. Obtain a copy of the survey by calling the Chamber at (202) 775-4399; (fax): (202) 659-3795.

FORGETTABLE MEMORIES - The item about the First Class Mess Deck on August 6 (NAMING NAMES) prompted LEN SUTTER, Class of 1953, to comment: "I'm still trying to forget some of that nautical flavored food from the EMPIRE STATE II." Does anyone recall any memorable dishes from chef Charlie Rey's galley or was that before his colorful culinary reign began?

SENIOR OCEAN ADVISOR - An e-mail note from BILL ERB, Class of 1965, was prompted by the NICE VENUE item in the August 6 issue. Bill writes: "I graduated in 1965, one of the first M and O types. Since then I've worked in the marine science area, employed by the Dept of State and now serving a detail to the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO as Senior Advisor. As such, the note about ED DANGLER giving a speech on LOS [law of the sea] relative to marine science was of great interest."
