News From Fort Schuyler

July 18, 1998 - Volume 2, No. 33

CALIFORNIA STORY - First things first. Thanks to CAPTAIN ED DANGLER, Class of 1949, for the royal treatment afforded to this editor during a brief stopover in that wonderful, compact, comfortable city: San Diego. A tour of a law office that is so nautical that you can almost feel the waves, followed by a festive luncheon with ED and VINNIE CASSIANO, Class of 1984, made it a special visit.

SAFE RETURN - Another Summer Sea Term has come to an end, with the EMPIRE STATE VI returning to the college pier on Tuesday morning with code flags flying from the superstructures. By all accounts SST 1998 featured interesting ports, a lot of learning and many good memories. Bravo to the cadet editor-in-chief of the SST 98 Cruise Log, JIM McCABE 2/c, and all his assistants. The logs, published throughout the cruise and posted on the college web page, http://www.sunymaritime.edu, were well-written and informative. If you haven't looked at them they are still there.

ALUMNI BULLETIN - Have you received that very impressive and substantial Spring 1998 issue of the "new-look" Alumni Bulletin in your mail box yet ? A bulletin it might be called, but a magazine it is (and a very nice one at that), with articles, news items, interesting graphics, and even a full-color cover. So, another bravo to some former cadets for a job well done: CHARLIE ELLWANGER, Class of 1955 (Publisher), and JIM MALONEY, Class of 1980 (Editor.)

ABOARD AND ASHORE - STAN MELASKY has been appointed Executive Director of the Maritime College Foundation and Director of Development for the College, replacing JOE BERESWILL, who has returned to private industry. According to ADM. DAVID BROWN, Stan's "...experience and skills will be put to immediate use as we move our $20 million Capital Campaign into high gear.

ATB UNITS ANYONE? A new "articulated tug-barge" unit, TERESA, capable of all-weather oceanic transportation of a barge holding 160,000 barrels of petroleum product, was featured in the Professional Mariner's annual supplement, "The1998 American Tugboat Review." Pictured in the article was JASON COUGHLIN, Class of 1995, Second Mate of TERESA. (Note: The bi-monthly Professional Mariner is an excellent magazine for its $25 subscription price.)

TSES III AND THAT 18" GUN - Another angle to the puzzle discussed in issues 27, 28 and 30 comes from MIKE QUINTO, Class of 1964 who e-mailed: " My recollection is that the 18" barrel was welded to the keel, which would make it possible to put it in place during construction and not have to get it into the hatch. Of course, this proves nothing more than we were all told a similar story, which may or may not be true. It WAS 40 years ago, and a lot closer to the time it supposedly took place."
