News From Fort Schuyler

April 17, 1998 - Volume 2, No. 18

CAPTAIN OLIVET - For many people on this list, Captain Alfred F. Olivet was a constant at the college since he was the Master of the EMPIRE STATE for many, many years. For some reason I had assumed he had "always" been captain. He was the commanding officer of the training ship when I came aboard in 1962 and had been captain for many years previously. FERGUSON BYARS, Class of 1939, recently informed me, however, that Captain Olivet (a graduate of the Class of 1921) taught mathematics in the years before assuming his role as master.

Fergie writes that: "... in my time [he] was an instructor. C.D.SCHULTZ '15 (three stripes) was the Executive Officer and J.H. Tomb, U.S.N (Ret) was our Captain. Those cadets who met the Captain were usually those who were lined up to receive demerits." (Source: e-mail correspondence)

VPAA ON THE MEND - Dr. Howard L. English, Jr., Vice President for Academic Affairs (and former long-time Registrar), has recently been re-hospitalized for the reoccurrence of a stubborn infection. He is reported to be recuperating well and anxious to return to the academic fray at Fort Schuyler. Needless to say, we wish him well and look forward to his return. (Source: Staff meeting)

FAMILY TIES WHERE THE MORE ARE THE MERRIER - This survey ("..the family with the LARGEST number of graduates") might well require the expertise of a trained genealogist for the data to be properly presented. I wonder if there might be/should be cousins, nephews and nieces to be considered? Will we find that there are only six degrees of separation when all the data are in? Please feel free to add to this listing and to make corrections.

INTO THE HOME STRETCH - With one more week of classes before examinations, things are at fever pitch here at Maritime -- which is why this issue might be better described as: "Not much News from Fort Schuyler." For example, things were so busy at the library on this week that we had to limit many students to fifteen minutes at our two Internet stations (yes, we DO need more than two for a student body our size!) But there is sure to be news of interest coming up soon very soon regarding the forthcoming graduation and the identity of this year's recipient of an honorary degree.
