COLLEGIATE ALL-STAR HONORABLE MENTION - Maritime's Mike Nukk '99 was cited in the authoritative Street & Smith's ranking of college basketball players. Mike was an honorable mention on the S&S college" Little All American" basketball team for 1997. A little net surfing showed that this was not the first time Mike had been noticed. HEADING OUT TO SEA - Richard S. Smith, Class of 1981, Assistant Professor of Marine Transportation and former MT Chair, has resigned. In a memo to the campus community dated January 12, President David C. Brown wrote that Rick "... has left the Marine Transportation Department to take a position with Vela Tankers as Master of one of their newest and largest Ultra Large Crude Carriers. Vela's offer required a commitment which precluded remaining a full-time faculty member at the College. In his written announcement, Rick indicated that leaving the College and his classroom instructor duties was an extremely difficult decision, but he wished to take advantage of the opportunity to sail as Master and he realized that he could not do both. He will continue to assist the crew team as his sailing schedule with Vela permits. We wish him success in his new position." Vela International Marine is based in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Bon voyage, Rick.
